A very Godminster Christmas with delicious organic cheddar

Our cheeses have been a great success – so much so that over the years we have developed a number of foodie gifts, which always include the cheese, of course!

Richard Hollingbery, owner of Godminster

Delicious organic cheddar has been being made at Godminster Vintage for over 60 years. This location is in Somerset and the cheeses have won a great many awards over the years. The cheese has a purple wax coating which makes it instantly recognisable and it is made from a 70-year-old recipe. Typically the cheese is made in round and heart shapes.

The cheese was originally made by Richard Hollingberv who bought the farm in the area and made the cheese to his own recipe and gave it away as thank you presents. The cheese was so well received by his friends that he started selling it commercially and thus the product as it is known today was made.

Cheese board is not complete if the cheddar from Godminster is not on it and the purple wax coating is something that is especially popular around Christmas time as people see it as festive. The wonderful decoration that the cheese comes and its delicious taste make it a popular gift for food lovers at Christmas.

Godminster also produces an oak-smoked Godminster cheddar. “We use the same mature cheddar as in our waxed truckles and cold smoke it over oak chippings sourced from sustainable woodland”, said Richard Hollingbery, Godminster’s owner. These are then hand-wrapped in muslin, making the perfect addition to the Godminster range.

Richard adds: “Our cheeses have been a great success’ so much so that over the years we have developed a number of foodie gifts, which always include the cheese, of course! My personal favourite as a traditional Yorkshireman is the cheese and fruit cake combination. When you eat the cheese we find there is no need to remove the wax before cutting. In fact, we find our cheese keeps its creamy consistency best if you keep it in the wax. The cheese can be scooped or sliced. Either score around the top and use it as a lid, scooping the cheese out, or cut through the wax like you would a cake. If there’s any left replace the lid, wrap the whole cheese in cling film and refrigerate.”

The organic cheddar starts at £14.95 and is available from www.godminster.com
