Spam® is now 75 years old – Celebrate SPAM® Appreciation Week 5 March to 11 March 2012

Her Majesty the Queen isn’t the only one who’s celebrating an important anniversary this year, believe it or not SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham is 75 years old!

The famous tinned meat also has its official appreciation week from 5 March 2012 so fans get an extra special excuse to enjoy their favourite meat, whether it’s in a sandwich, on pizza or as a SPAM® Fritter.  Convenient and affordable, SPAM® Chopped Pork and Ham is tasty and versatile enough to be enjoyed as part of any meal occasion.  So why not crack open a can and show your appreciation!

After all, it has an amazing heritage.  Back in 1936, Hormel Foods developed a recipe for a 12 ounce can of spiced ham.  Because the new product was quickly copied by competitors, Jay Hormel was determined to find a brand name with a distinct identity to set it apart from competitive products.  He launched a series of contests and offered a $100 prize for the best name.  Kenneth Daigneau, actor-brother of Hormel Foods Vice President Ralph Daigneau, submitted the name SPAM at a New Year’s Eve party.
