Oakpark take the gold for their bacon in the Own Label food and drink awards

The annual Own Label food and drink awards were held in London last week and Oakpark Foods scooped a gold medal in the chilled bacon category. Beating entries from all the major UK retailers, Oakpark won the award for its dry cure rashers which are sold by Lidl.

There were more than 750 own label products entered for the awards which are held by The Grocer magazine. The entrant’s products were subject to sixteen weeks of consumer testing before the finalists were assessed by a panel of food experts, journalists and chefs.

Oakpark Foods is owned by the Callan-based, family run Brett Group and their bacon rashers were the only Irish product to win a gold medal. The Brett Group was set up in 1940 and now has plants in Windgap and Ardfinnan as well as Callan. They manufacture and supply animal feed to pig and cattle farmers and also have their own pig units.

The Brett Group is also involved in supplying seed grain to arable farmers. Jimmy Brett, the managing director of Oakpark Foods, said that the award was testament to the professionalism and dedication of the company’s fifty staff and that it would greatly benefit their export drive into Britain.
