Nigel White is the secretary of the BCB and he has commented, “We think that cheddar cheese is a national treasure and it seems only appropriate that if people are composing a tune to celebrate this fantastic cheese that it is done alongside the national anthem. There are two other tracks that can be used for entry into the competition which are equally patriotic, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.”

The cheesemaker, Alex James, is also a musician perhaps known for performing in the rock band Blur. He has commented, “There are over 700 cheeses in the UK and it is remarkable to think that one cheese makes up for half of the country sales. This just goes to show what a popular cheese cheddar is and how important it is to our nation.”

Who writes the best song is going to be judged by a panel of experts from the BCB and there is also going to be an element of public voting involved. It is estimated that the competition will run until late July, when an overall winner will be chosen.

Mr James continued, “I think this is a very important time for people to support our economy by buying British, and you don’t really get more British than cheddar cheese. This competition is a great way to support the cheese industry in the UK and I think it is going to be a lot of fun for all those entering the competition as well as those judging it.”

The fish and chip shop is called The Bay and it is one of the two finalists which have been competing for a sustainability award which is going to be announced at the Food and Drink Excellence Awards, based in Scotland.

The fish and chip shop has been recognised in the past for its excellent food however, and it is currently ranked as the best fish and chip shop in Scotland. The shop has already been recognised in the past for its commitment to sustainability, and this new award is just going to be further recognition of its achievements.

These Food & Drink awards are designed to recognise the best food companies in Scotland. This fish and chip shop unknown for doing everything they can to be environmentally friendly.

All of the waste oil from the restaurant is used to make bio diesel and all of the food is composted. It contributes a remarkably small amounts to landfill in Scotland. In addition to all of this, all of the packaging that the food is put into, is made out of 100 percent recycled materials.

Callum Richardson is the owner of the restaurant and he has commented, “To be a finalist at these awards is fantastic. We want to encourage best practices in the industry and encourage other fish and chip restaurants across the UK to do the same.”

This year we are particularly pleased to be able to welcome Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry to the events who are regarded as some of the best bakers in the country.” Many hotels and restaurants in the surrounding area are getting involved with the festival and there of recently been many applications by these organisations to have a stand at the event.

This is the seventh year that the festival is taking place and there are going to be very notable chefs appearing at the event including Michael Caines and James Martin. The French chef, Jean Christophe Novelli is also going to be making an appearance.

Mr Simpson continued, “This is an event that has become more and more important for the city over the last seven years. Manchester is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the UK and ranks third after Edinburgh and London. We think this festival provides an authentic experience for visitors and it has not just a national appeal, but an international draw as well.”

The launch event took place at Harvey Nichols, which has its flagship store in Manchester and the hospitality manager of this company, Michael Currie has stated, “Bolton is very easily reachable from Manchester and so we expect that many people from the city are going to be visiting this area to go to the festival. We see this as an excellent opportunity to develop our food brand.”

Before this law was put into place Cambridgeshire, where Stilton is actually located, was one of the counties that was allowed to call the cheese produced there by its rightful name. However, a decision which seemed rather ridiculous, meant that Stilton cheese that actually came from Stilton, cannot be called by that name. Instead, cheeses produced in the village had to change their name and instead adopted, Bell Blue.

This decision has recently been reversed however after a final battle by the village to be able to call the cheese by its true name. The producers in the area are currently now going through the process of renaming their cheese back to Stilton. The reversal of decision was taken after the village made an application to the Department of Food and Agriculture in order to have their right to name the cheese restored.

The entire village got involved in a campaign and it involved a lot of signs being put up around the village. The name of the cheese was supposedly taken from the village and used first during the 18th century, when travellers would be passing through the village buying the blue cheese.

2012 Nottingham Food Festival set to be the best ever

A wide range of new ingredients are going to be involved in the Food and Drink Festival that is going to be held in Nottingham this year. The new ingredients mean that this event is going to be the most varied festival that has ever taken place in the city.

This is the fourth year that the festival has taken place in the city and this year it has attracted sponsorship from the airline, bmibaby.

The event is going to start on the 4th July and runs for four days. At the centre of the Festival will be the Market Square in the city, where over 40 stalls are going to be located selling all different kinds of food. There is going to be a specific area focusing on wine and beer this year where all sorts of beverages will be able to be sampled. Many of these include local ales and wines.

The demo theatre will make a welcome return, newly extended for 2012, and, once again, restaurants and bars across the city centre will be hosting a varied programme of events and masterclasses. With everything from sushi making to blind cocktail tasting, there will also be a host of special offers to tempt diners to sample the wide variety of cuisines that Nottingham has to offer.

Sylvia Oates, chief executive of We Are Nottingham, commented: We’re thrilled to be back for 2012 and to have bmibaby on board for a five-day celebration of Nottingham’s vibrant food and drink offering. The new beer and wine marquee is something that we’ve been looking at for a while and will be a showcase area for some of the finest wine producers and the region’s outstanding breweries and microbreweries.

“This year, we’ve made the decision to extend the demonstration area so that even more people can enjoy the demos and pick up some inspiration. We have some talented chefs in this city and this is all about showcasing their talents and making them the stars of the show. Last year’s event was our busiest yet, and with the new elements and varied programme, I’m confident that 2012 will be a record year for the bmibaby Nottingham Food and Drink Festival.”

There are also many other highlights of the event including the appearance of Lesley Waters, the famed TV chef as well as James Martin and Alex Aitken. The first medicinal chef in the UK, Dale Pinnock is also going to be at the event and he is going to be giving demonstrations about how to create food that is good for your health and is capable of treating various ailments.

This year is also going to see the first time a baking event is going to take place. This is largely been organised as a response to the great baking boom that has been taking place in the country. The event is being sponsored by the Captains Club Hotel, and the restaurant from this hotel is also going to be featured at the event. They are also going to be running a champagne bar.

Worcestershire normally has the festival at this time of year but the bad weather has meant that the festival has had to be cancelled as not enough asparagus has been grown in time. Normally, thousands of people attend the festival and they’re all going to be very disappointed to hear that it has been cancelled.

www.britishasparagusfestival.org is organised by Angela Tidmarsh, and she has said, “We knew that this year asparagus was going to be in short supply because the weather has not been ideal for growing it. Unfortunately, a lot of the asparagus crop has been flooded and we are simply not able to bring enough asparagus to the festival for it to be held. We are very apologetic to all people who were looking forward to attending the festival, it is a great disappointment to us, as organisers, as well.

It’s ironic as the British Asparagus Festival was started as a way of helping the area recover after the severe floods of 2007”.That said, we plan to continue to celebrate asparagus throughout May and hope that the crop will be available for the famous auction at the Fleece at Bretforton on 27th May. At this rate, it will be selling at record prices”.

The annual festival usually features stalls selling all-things asparagus including soap, sausages and sweets. Local chefs do cookery demos, an asparamancer reads people’s fortunes using the vegetable and there’s even asparagus toothpaste this year.

Continuing, Angela said:“We’ll crown the King of Asparagus with an asparagus crown at the auction and recreate elements of the festival at the Fleece at Bretforton”.

The event was so popular that many of the items that local producers had brought to the show, had already sold out by the mid-afternoon on just one day. There were also significant queues to get into the different attractions although some of this was because people were desperate to get out of the rain.

One of the biggest attractions at the day was the appearance of the Fabulous Baker Brothers, from the television show on Channel 4. They were performing live cooking demonstrations using food from Sainsbury’s and these proved immensely popular.

This is the first time that the event has taken place in the marketplace at Bishop Auckland. The event is usually run at Auckland Castle, and it was also run at this location in order to increase capacity this year.

There are a panel of judges which are going to be deciding which companies have the finest food and this panel is chaired by Clive Beddall, an expert from the food industry. There are going to be eight categories of prizes and there is also going to be a public vote to help decide on which company wins. It is expected that the voting is going to take place in early June.

Last year West Sussex was a particularly strong performer and they won around half of all the prizes available. The event is something that is strongly supported by local organisations and businesses and the scheme is regarded as rather prestigious.

Those who win the awards can expect a good deal of extra business because people will understand that their quality is some of the finest in Sussex and perhaps the UK. There are still sponsorship opportunities available for the festival and companies are encouraged to enquire.
